Everton Luiz broke down in tears after suffering racist abuse while playing for Serbian club Partizan Belgrade on Sunday.
The Brazil midfielder is in his first season with the club and left the field in tears after his side's 1-0 win over local rivals Rad Beograd on Saturday.
Luiz, 28, said opposition fans had subjected him to monkey chants through the entire 90 minutes, with the abuse getting louder every time he touched the ball.
A banner was unfurled during the game insulting the player with the referee briefly pausing the game, while stewards also issued messages to both sets of fans to stop their chanting.
Luiz gestured towards the abusive fans after the final whistle and some had to be restrained by police from getting on to the pitch.
He said: "I've been suffering racist abuse during the entire 90 minutes and also was upset by the home players, who supported that. They were all attacking me.
"I want to forget this as soon as possible. I love Serbia and the people here, that is why I cried.
"But please say no to racism."
Luiz could face sanctions over his one-fingered gesture towards the Rad supporters but he was backed by Partizan boss Marko Nikolic.
Nikolic said: "It's a return to the reality of Serbian football. Everton should not have reacted but something provoked his outburst, didn't it?"
