Glasgow City beaten 5-0 by Barcelona
Wednesday 17 October 2018 22:00, UK
Karen Carney's ninth-minute penalty earned Chelsea a 1-0 win over Fiorentina in the first leg of their Women's Champions League last-16 tie.
Carney converted from the spot at Kingsmeadow for a 1-0 win ahead of the second leg at Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence on October 31.
German midfielder Stephanie Breitner was adjudged to have handled Erin Cuthbert's attempted cross from the right.
Carney kept her composure to score under the dive of Fiorentina goalkeeper Stephanie Ohrstrom.
Chelsea may be frustrated not to have added to their advantage, but Swedish goalkeeper Ohrstrom made a string of fine saves, with Romana Bachmann, Fran Kirby, Erin Cuthbert, Millie Bright and Carney thwarted.
A 5-0 loss at Barcelona appears to have ended Glasgow City's Champions League hopes for another year.
Goals from Kheira Hamraoui, Aitana Bonmati and Patricia Guijarro gave hosts Barca a 3-0 half-time lead.
Andressa Alves and Maria Leon struck in the second half to complete the rout, and England international Toni Duggan came on in the second half for Barcelona.
The second leg takes place at Petershill Park, Glasgow on November 1.
