Jose Mourinho was involved in a confrontation with Manchester City players in the tunnel after Manchester United's 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford, Sky sources understand.

It is understood the Portuguese clashed with the City players because he objected to their exuberant post-match celebrations near the changing rooms.

City coach Mikel Arteta was left bleeding from his face from the melee, according to Sky sources, and several national newspaper reports claim Mourinho was soaked with water and milk.

The fracas will prompt comparisons with the infamous 'Battle of the Buffet' at the same ground when former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was hit by pizza after his side beat Arsenal 2-0 in 2004.

Cesc Fabregas recently confessed he was the guilty party on that occasion, as tempers boiled over in the title race.

Mourinho accused City of being "lucky" and getting favourable decisions after his side's defeat, live on Sky Sports as part of a huge Super Sunday double-header following the Merseyside derby.

He told Sky Sports: "I think they are a very good team, I think they are lucky, I think [they] have all the decisions in their favour, probably yes.

"But Tuesday is another day in our Premier League, and I am sure all of us, everyone is going to fight for points and try to reduce the distance, which is the normal thing in the championship but of course the advantage is a very good one."
