Marco Silva tried to play down speculation linking him with Everton during his pre-match press conference on Thursday.

Silva has been heavily linked with the vacant managerial position at Everton following Ronald Koeman's departure from Goodison Park last month.

Watford have spurned Everton's advances for their head coach and Sky sources understand they have told the Merseysiders to end their pursuit of Silva.

During his press conference ahead of the Hornets' visit to Newcastle on Saturday, Silva was asked by Sky Sports News' Gary Cotterill whether Everton being warned off by Watford was now the end of the matter.

"I will answer straight [and tell you] to stop because I don't like to talk about speculation and all these things," Silva replied.

"I'm here to talk about our match Newcastle v Watford and nothing more."

Cotterill explained that refusing to say the matter was closed would lead to more speculation, but Silva interrupted to say: "Okay if you like the speculation continue in your way.

Watford must do "everything possible" to keep Marco Silva from leaving for Everton, Christian Kabasele said last week.

Silva was then asked if he treats interest from other clubs as a compliment.

"Newcastle vs Watford," Silva replied. "I will answer 10 or 20 [questions on this] for you."

Asked if it is difficult to show loyalty to an owner who has sacked five managers in four years, Silva said: "If you want I can change with the owner Gino Pozzo and he can make the question for you.

"You know what is most important for me - Newcastle v Watford, my team, and tomorrow's training session. For you the other things are more important."

Silva added: "The fans, they know what is most important to us and they know as well we are fully focused on our job."
