Sunderland were stranded on the south coast on Wednesday night after their flight home from Southampton was cancelled due to thick fog.

David Moyes and his struggling players, who were knocked out of the EFL Cup after a 1-0 defeat at St Mary's, were forced to about-turn at Southampton Airport and head to a hotel for the night.

The squad went through a recovery session at their hotel on Thursday morning and are now set to return to the North East later in the day.

The delay is the latest in a list of problems to face the Premier League's bottom side, who are without a league win this season.

It capped a night to forget for Moyes, who was also sent to the stands for over-vigorously complaining to the referee that his side should have been awarded a penalty late on.

Now he returns to the North East with less than 48 hours to prepare his side for the visit of Arsenal on Saturday, live on Sky Sports
